WHAT IS FINETUNE?
FineTune is a menuing system that goes beyond simply choosing
a program to execute. FineTune provides an easy way to change the
way your computer is configured via the config.sys and autoexec.bat
files. You may link a specific autoexec.bat and/or a config.sys
file to a program so that before the program is run the specific
files are written, the computer is rebooted automatically to accept
the new configuration, and the program is run.
You may also change the configuration without running a
program by selecting either an autoexec.bat or a config.sys entry
from your list. After the appropriate configuration files are
written the computer is rebooted to accept the new setup.
In addition to linking configuration files to a program you
may also link a config.sys entry to an autoexec.bat entry or an
autoexec.bat entry to a config.sys entry. If you select either an
autoexec.bat or a config.sys entry the linked entry is also written
and the computer rebooted.
INSTALLATION
To install FineTune simply type install and answer the two
questions. The install program will take care of the rest of the
installation.
Following is a description of the install process:
1. The home directory you specified is created if need be.
2. The FineTune files are copied to their home directory.
3. The existing autoexec.bat file is modified to start
FineTune.
4. The computer is rebooted.
5. The installation is now complete.
If your current autoexec.bat file has a command to run an
application, you should delete the command and add it to the
Program List in FineTune.

THE MENU BAR AND BASIC FINETUNE FUNCTIONS
FILE
The first two selections, New and Open, deal with the text
editor. New opens an untitled text window for input. When
you select either of the save commands, you will be prompted
for the title. The title must follow DOS file naming
conventions, i.e. eight characters with a three-character
extension. You may include a directory name in the title.
Open allows you to edit an existing file. This can be a file
created with the built in text editor or another editor. The
file must be straight ASCII however, special characters used
by other word processors or editors are not recognized.
Run Program displays a selection box with your list of
programs. Use the arrow keys or mouse to make your selection.
For more information see the Options-Run a Program section.
Save enables you to save the contents of the editor window. If
the file is untitled you will be prompted for a name, else the
current name will be used.
Save As saves the contents to a different file. You will be
prompted for the name.
DOS leaves FineTune and "shells out" to the command line
interpreter. You may run other programs from here, but be
aware that FineTune uses about 200K of memory, so any programs
you wish to run must fit in the remaining memory. Type "exit"
to return to FineTune.
Reboot does a warm restart of your computer.
Exit quits FineTune and returns you to DOS.
EDIT
Undo restores the text from the last Delete or Clear command.
Cut copies the marked text into a "clipboard" for copying,
pasting or deleting and closes the space.
Copy copies the marked text into the clipboard.
Paste moves the text you have "Cut" or "Copied" from the
clipboard to the current cursor location.
Clear deletes the marked text. You may use the Undo command
to restore the text.
Delete removes the marked block of text and closes the space.
You may use the Undo command to restore the text.
Paragraph places a new paragraph marker at the current cursor
position.
SEARCH
Search finds the character string you specify.
Replace searches for and replaces the respective text strings
that you have specified.
Next continues the Search or the Replace operation.
OPTIONS
Display shows and allows you to change the display
configuration. Options include:
Window: Title - should the title be displayed or not.
Border - should there be a border.
Status bar - display or not.
Texture - should the application window be
textured or not.

some laptops with LCD screens, reverse
provides an easier to read display).
Boot drive displays and allows you to change the disk drive
that the computer (and FineTune) boots from. (Note: If you
change the boot drive, you must also ensure that the FineTune
home directory and files exist on this drive.)
Home directory displays and allows you to change the directory
that FineTune uses for it's files. (Note: If you change this
directory, you must manually copy all of the files to the new
directory, FineTune does not automatically do this for you.)
Show Configuration displays the current autoexec.bat and
config.sys files you computer is using. This information is
set when you either select a configuration file or when these
files are used by a program you have run. Any changes you
have made outside of FineTune to these files are not detected
by FineTune and therefore not displayed here.
Programs invokes a sub-menu consisting of:
Add places a program to your menu list. You will be
prompted for a descriptive title, a pre-execution command
(this can either be a single command or a batch file),
command line arguments for the program to be run, and a
post-execution command (this may also be either a single
command or a batch file). After you have completed this
dialogue box, a display of executable files (*.exe) will
be presented. You may change directories, file name
extensions (.com, .bat, etc.) or simply type in the name
of the program you wish to have run. After you have made
your selection click the "Ok" button to complete the
program addition.
Delete removes a program from the menu system. The list
of programs is displayed for your selection. After you
have made your selection with either the arrow keys or
the mouse, click the "Ok" button to delete the program.
Link allows you to link an autoexec.bat and/or a
config.sys file with the program. When programs that
have links are selected, the specific autoexec.bat and/or
config.sys files are written, the current configuration
(see Show configuration, above) is updated and if
necessary, the computer is rebooted. FineTune checks the
current configuration with the linked files and if they
are different the computer is rebooted. If they are the
same, the program is run without rebooting.
Unlink Autoexec removes the link to an autoexec.bat file.
Unlink Config removes the link to a config.sys file.
List displays your program entries in your menu.
Edit allows you to edit a program entry. You may change
the description, the pre-execution, the command line
options, the post-execution or the program itself with
this command.
Run executes a program. This is the same as Run a
program from the File option and the same as pressing
Alt+R.
Autoexec displays a sub-menu consisting of:
Add inserts an autoexec.bat entry. You will be prompted
for a description. If you click "Ok" the current
autoexec.bat file is copied and given a unique name (i.e.

that when you add an autoexec.bat entry it is checked for
the FineTune execution command. If that command is not
found, it is added to the end of the autoexec.bat file.
Delete removes an autoexec.bat entry. Make your
selection from the list and click "Ok" to delete this
entry. This function automatically removes links to the
deleted autoexec.bat file in program and config.sys
entries.
Link Config.sys links a config.sys entry to the
autoexec.bat entry you specify. When you make a new
autoexec.bat selection the linked config.sys entry is
also made active.
Unlink Config.sys removes the link to the config.sys
entry. This does not delete the entry, it simply removes
the link.
List displays the autoexec.bat entries you have
available.
Edit allows you to change the contents of an autoexec.bat
entry with the FineTune editor.
Select replaces the current autoexec.bat file with an
entry in your list. If there is a config.sys entry
linked to the autoexec.bat entry you have selected it
will also be written. If your selection is different
from that in the current configuration (see Show
configuration), the computer is rebooted.
Config displays a sub-menu consisting of:
